My guess is that as a child he must have wished there were more important figures out that looked like him too. As adults, we scoff at such things, but kids are different. It MATTERS to kids if a hero looks like them or not, especially if there are so few heroes that look like them.  You want to offer these kids alternatives to the usual white hero…when you don’t, they start thinking that what you always see is the best and that what you don’t see as often or in a lower station (someone like themselves) is not as good.  And that subtle message starts sinking and affects the way they view the world and themselves.  </p> <p>So Obama obliging a little boy to prove to him that yes, someone who looks like him could become president, was very important.  The little boy had to feel his hair to be sure, cuz he obviously had doubts.  It’s so sad that this was needed. You don’t see white kids asking white presidents to touch their hair to verify if they look like them. They dont’ need that verification. They know it.
